Friday, September 23rd, 2016 – John English Update
Home and School Connection: It was great to see so many parents in the school during our Curriculum Night. Research continues to tell us a strong connection between home and school and parents speaking to their children about school work are key elements when looking at student success at school. Many of our teachers make use of Google classroom or classroom websites that allow parents to keep up to date with what is happening in your child’s school life. Our ‘Friday Updates’ are sent home weekly to provide more information about what is happening at school and to provide you with more information about upcoming events. If you know of someone who is not receiving our updates, please have them contact the school to confirm their email address.
Thank You: We thank all of our parent volunteers for their help with our curriculum night. Thank you to Terry Durette and the School Council who organized our pizza sales for the evening and thank you to all of our more than 40 student helpers who made themselves available for the evening to help serve pizza and direct parents throughout the school. Thank you as well to all those parents who sent in baked goods for sale during our evening. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Parents Visiting the School: All parents who are visiting the school are reminded to begin their visit at the main office, to sign in and receive a visitor’s badge. Parents who are picking up a child from the playground during school hours will need to sign in and wear a visitor’s badge. Parents who are dropping off or picking up children are also reminded to refrain from distributing advertising or other items to students. Volunteers who are assisting in the school on a regular basis are required to have an initial police check completed and each subsequent year are to complete an offence declaration. Both the police check and offence declaration can be completed through the main office.
Parent Information Sessions: The Etobicoke Children’s Centre is an organization who supports parents through workshops and professional services. Attached are two flyers from The Etobicoke Children’s Centre. This first advertises an information session for parents about the impact of electronics on brain development and the second outlines the centre’s walk in hours.
Grade 9 Choices: Although the school year has just begun, our Grade 8 students are already beginning to think about Grade 9. Ms. Bryer, our guidance counsellor, will be visiting all of our Grade 8 students in the next few weeks and teachers will be speaking with their classes about the many options for Grade 9. Students and parents are encouraged to visit Secondary School open houses. Attached is a copy of the schedule of open houses. More information about Choices for Grade 9 is available at http://www.tdsb.on.ca/highschool/guidance/choices.aspx
Quiznos Lunches: Ms. West and our Eco and Equity teams organize Quiznos lunch days to help support our school and a number of charitable organizations. Our first Quiznos lunch will be occurring on Friday October 21. On Quiznos lunch days students have an opportunity to order a sub sandwich, drink and chips for a reasonable price. Money raised from these days will be directed to We Schools, Right to Play, Toronto Foundation for Student Success, John English Eco Schools and a water bottle filling station at the school. About a week prior to the lunch an order form will be sent home with your child. The forms should be returned to your child’s teacher and they will be forwarded to Ms. West and her team. Thank you for your support of these days.
Kiss and Ride: Parents are reminded to use our Kiss and Ride if you are dropping off students in the morning. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. parents can use the south entrance to the parking lot and drive through to the drop off location near the school and then exit the north end of the parking lot. An adult will be supervising the drop off. We continue to look for volunteers to assist with the Kiss and Ride program.
Student Immunization: Our Public Health reminds parents to update their child’s immunization information. Further details can be found in the attached flyer.
Parent Safety Program Volunteers: Parents, we are looking for volunteers to assist with our Kiss and Ride program in the morning and afternoon. If you are available from 8:25 to 8:45 a.m. or 3:10 to 3:30 p.m. once a week please contact Ms. Jenkins at the school to inform her of your availability.
