John English Friday Update – October 21

Friday, October 21st, 2016 – John English Update Twitter @JohnenglishJM

School Bus Information: From time to time, traffic and other unexpected delays can prevent our school buses from running on time. If you are waiting for your child to be picked up or dropped off, please be aware that as long as the route is running within 20 minutes of the scheduled route time the bus company will not provide any notification of delay. If the expected delay will be greater than 20 minutes, then the bus company posts the expected delay on the following website:

If you have further questions with regard to the transportation policy, you may also contact the Toronto Student Transportation Group at 416-394-4BUS.

Photo Re-take Day: Wednesday, November 2 is our photo re-take day. Students who were absent on our first photo day and students who would like a second photo opportunity should come to school prepared for a photograph. If a student requires a re-take please send a message in to the homeroom teacher prior to November 2 indicating the desire to have a second photo taken.

Secondary School Open Houses: Even though the year has just begun, our Grade 8 students are preparing for Grade 9. Part of the preparation includes learning about the Choices for Grade 9. A presentation will take place on October 27th. It is also important for students and parents to visit the Secondary school open houses. Open house nights are occurring on:

October 25th – Western Tech 6:30 p.m.

November 1st – Ursula Franklin Academy – 7:00 p.m.

November 3rd – Etobicoke School of the Arts 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Parents should consult school websites for further information

Girl’s Football: The girl’s football team had an undefeated regular season – winning two games (one in overtime) and tying another. The defense led by Boheun and Noura were solid providing the quarterbacks, Eleeza and Macy time to make passes to star receivers, Kaitlyn, Maija and Jasmine. Unfortunately, the team lost to Rockcliffe in the semi-finals by three points to end their season. Congratulations to all the players for their effort and dedication to the team and practices. Thank you to all the parents for assisting with transportation to and from games! Thank you as well to Ms. Broughton for her time coaching the team.

Young Women on the Move – Celebrating the International Day of the Girl: Young Women on the Move (YWM) was initiated within TDSB in the 2009-10 school year. It is a mentorship program, aimed at girls in Grade 3 to 10, that builds on existing mentorship programs within schools, to empower girls to become “positive agents of change”. This past Monday, Mme Trudeau and Ms. McWhinnie, took a group of Grade 4 and 5 girls to our first Board-wide YWM event. This event celebrated the International Day of the Girl. Using his book, A Squiggly Story, author Andrew Larsenshared how girls can strengthen their voice through resilience, self-discovery, and self-expression. The girls also participated in several hands-on activities which highlighted that to find one’s voice requires resilience, belonging and a state of well-being. Several YWM groups plan to meet on a regular basis at John English, throughout the school year.

Grade 1 and 2 Cross – Country Meet at John English – POSTPONED: Due to rainy and wet weather our cross-country event for our Grade 1 and 2 students has been postponed until Tuesday October 25th.

Cross – Country West Finals: Congratulations to our Cross – Country team who sent over 50 students to the West Conference Finals this week. A number of students placed highly (Roman – 2nd, Hannah and Ela – 3rd, Haley – 5th, Avery – 9th and Phaedra – 10th) and we will be sending 18 students to the finals this coming week. We wish all of our students success.

Quiznos Lunch: Our first Quiznos lunch on Friday October 21st was a great success. Students had an opportunity to enjoy a healthy lunch; parents could take a break from making lunches. A big thank you goes to our Grade 8 student equity committee representatives who attended this year’s WE DAY on October 19. These committed students helped as John English raised over $800.00 in support of the Toronto Foundation for Student Success Feed Tomorrow campaign which supports nutrition programs throughout the TDSB.

From School Council

Fresh from the Farm: John English families ordered a total of 425 bundles of food which is 75 more bundles than in our previous year. Not only do these orders provide fresh delicious produce for our families but they also support our local farmers and school council initiatives such as the Ukulele program, Scientists in the School and our skating program. Of special note is the generosity of so many of our John English families. Over 110 bundles of food were directed to the Daily Bread Food Bank. The food bank has never had an order so large from one group. We thank everyone for their generosity and kindness towards others in need. John English families are special people. Congratulations to students in Mme Vella’s and Mme Saprykina’s classes who ordered over $700.00 worth of food and who have won an apple pie party. The winner of the iPod Touch was Madison Sweitzer. Thank you to everyone for your support.
