First Term Reports: Students will be coming home with First Term report cards on Tuesday, February 14th. Parent – teacher interviews will take place during the evening of Thursday, February 16th and the morning of Friday, February 17th. Information has already been sent home indicating if an interview has been requested by a teacher. If parents would like to request an interview and they have not indicated this desire to their child’s teacher, they can call the school to arrange an interview time with the teacher.

Parents as Partners Conference 2017: Please find attached a poster advertising the Parents as Partners Conference 2017. This is a free conference planned by parents for parents and it includes a variety of workshops and resources to help parents support their child in their achievement and well-being at school and at home. Parenting Challenging Children: The George Hull Centre is a community resource for children and parents. They offer valuable services and workshops. Attached are two flyers about George Hull programs.

Kindergarten Registration: This is a reminder that kindergarten registration will take place at John English the week of Tuesday, February 21st. If you have a child born in 2013, please call the school office as soon as possible to book an appointment and receive a registration package.

Building Resilience and Battling Anxiety: On Monday, February 13th, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., the Sir Adam Beck School Council is pleased to invite you to a free presentation at the Alderwood Library (2 Orianna Drive, Toronto) on the topic of anxiety in elementary school children by Dr. Taylor Armstrong from the George Hull Centre for Children and Families. This presentation is open to all community members, so we encourage you to share with others who may be interested in this important topic.
Please RSVP via sabschoolcouncil and let us know your name, how many people will attend and how many children require babysitting, which will be free of charge.

About the speaker:

Dr. Taylor Armstrong is a child and adolescent psychiatrist at The George Hull Centre, and an associate professor with the University of Toronto. He completed medical school and his residency in psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Clinically, Dr. Armstrong provides assessment and treatment for children and adolescents of all ages and with a wide range of presenting concerns, including neurodevelopmental disorders and struggles with mood and anxiety. He values the tireless work of schools and their staff and has an interest in helping them in their efforts to strengthen the mental health of their students.

The George Hull Centre for Children and Families offers a full spectrum of child and youth mental health services to children from birth to age 18 and their families.

Quiznos Lunch: Thank you to all the students who ordered a sub sandwich for today. The Grade 7 Eco Team successfully sold 440 lunches raising just over $800.00 for a water project in India. Thank you to all the students for their organizing efforts and to Ms. West for her leadership.

Sports Update: Our Grade 8 Girls volleyball team continues to experience success on the court. Today they played the second half of the preliminary rounds and won all three of their games. They will now advance to the next round as they compete against a field of 34 TDSB schools.

Toronto Marlies Game – John English Community Event: The John English School Council is asking everyone to hold the date of Sunday, March 26 at 5:00 p.m. for a community event. Families will have an opportunity to purchase Toronto Marlies tickets for $20.00 each. The tickets will be located in a block so that students, families and friends of John English will be able to sit together. A flyer with order form will be sent home with students at the beginning of next week. Forms and money are to be sent to the school office through your child’s homeroom teacher.

Next School Council Meeting: April 6th at 7:00 p.m. in the library.
