Friday, March 3, 2017 – John English Update – Twitter @JohnenglishJM

Spirit Week: John English students will have a chance to show their school spirit just a little more than usual this coming week as each day will have a special theme. Students are encouraged to participate to the best of their ability as we take time to celebrate the community of John English.

Monday: Jersey Day – wear your favorite team jersey

Tuesday: Teacher vs. Student basketball – students will have a chance to watch this exciting game at lunch

Wednesday: Crazy Hat Day – wear your crazy hats that tell us who you are

Thursday: Teacher vs. Student volleyball – our second super sporting event

Friday: Talent Show – the grand finale!

Morning (10:00) Kindergarten to Grade 4

Afternoon (12:45) Grades 5 – 8

The week will be exciting for all our students. We thank the student council and Ms. Roberts for their efforts organizing this week.

Read For Fun Week: It is always good to build strong reading habits. March 6–10 is our Read for Fun week. Students will have many opportunities to celebrate their reading. They will; create a design of their favorite book for their locker, listen to daily announcements informing students about great books to read, hear mystery readers, and track the number of pages that our school has read each day with a goal of reading 100,000 pages as a school in the week. Reading for enjoyment and interest is a tremendous activity that we can all participate in.

March Break: The school will be closed to students from March 13–17 for the March Break. We hope all families will have time to rest and relax during the break in the school year and that students will return focused and energized for completion of the second term.

Water Bottle Sale: The John English EcoTeam is celebrating World Water Month for the month of March. We are selling reusable, stainless steel water bottles with the John English Logo embossed on them. Each bottle will have a name band at the bottom so they can be easily identified. We are selling both blue and silver bottles.

Each water bottle costs $10 with proceeds going to the World Wildlife Foundation’s Freshwater Fund. Help us to minimize the use of plastic water bottles in our school! Order deadline is Wednesday, March 8th. Students can pick up an order form from Mme Way in Room 213 or the main office, or you can print one from the attachment.

The Big Crunch: During the afternoon of March 9th, students at John English JMS will be participating in the 10th anniversary of “The Great Big Crunch”. This nutritious activity encourages all students to bite into a juicy apple simultaneously, creating a CRUNCH that will be heard throughout the school. Since its inception over 900 000 students have participated in this delicious program, highlighting the importance of nutritious snacking and the consumption of fresh local produce. Listen carefully during the afternoon of March 9th, you never know what you might hear.

Sports Update: The Hockey team competed in the West Region Finals on Thursday, March 2nd against a strong Humber Valley team and lost the game 5–3. Thank you to our coaches Mme Easton and Mrs. Broughton, and all our parent volunteers who supported our student athletes this year.

Our grade 6 Boys Basketball team won their Division 1 Western Conference Championship and are off to the city finals next week. Way to go boys – and thanks to Mr. Poyser and Mr. Kamaka for coaching our athletes.

Concours d’art Oratoire: Our grade 4–8 students participated in our annual French speech contest organized by Mme Kamnik. Congratulations to all our winners.

Celebrate International Women’s Day 2017: Please see the attached flyer from LAMP inviting women and children to their annual potluck and get-together on Sunday, March 5th at 4:30 p.m.
