Friday, March 3, 2017 – John English Weekly Update

Friday, March 3, 2017 – John English Update Twitter @JohnenglishJM

March Break: March 13–17: All students and families are reminded that March break begins on Monday, March 13th and there will be no school for students for the week. During this time, students are encouraged to read each day and to continue to talk about what they have read. If you are remaining in Toronto during this time, you may find it interesting to visit different attractions in the city or take time to walk through your neighbourhood to discover something new. We look forward to the safe return of all of our students on Monday, March 20th.

Read For Fun Week:
March 6–10 was Read for Fun Week at John English. Our goal was to read over 100,000 pages as a school during the week. By Wednesday morning we had read over 45,000 pages and by Friday afternoon we smashed our goal by reading a total of 121,873 pages. Reading is a great way to exercise your brain. All students should continue to read for 15–30 minutes each day throughout the March break and into the spring time. We will update our read-o-meter on Monday, March 20th. Lucky winners of books in our random Read for Fun draw were Luke (Mr. Murray), Etsi (Mme Trudeau), Sara (Mr. Nunes) and Luke (Ms. Rome).

Spirit Week: We thank our student council for organizing Spirit Week 2017. Students had the opportunity to watch staff-student basketball and volleyball games, wear crazy hats, pyjamas and their favorite team uniforms. It was wonderful to see our community demonstrate the spirit that makes John English a great place to learn and play.

Talent Show: Friday, March 10th, the John English students displayed their many talents in our biannual talent show. Over 50 acts were on display as performers from Grade 1 to 8 presented their strange and wonderful talents that they had been rehearsing for months and months. All students should be proud of their efforts as they performed before an audience of 500 people. For photos of the action in the auditorium you can view our twitter feed @JohnEnglishJM. Thank you to Ms. McLeggon and Ms. Roberts for their organization of the show.

The Big Crunch: John English students had the opportunity to participate in the big crunch on Thursday, March 9th. The Big Crunch is a moment in time when all students take a bite out of an apple and they think about the importance of healthy eating habits. Thank you to the Healthy Bites team for their support of the Big Crunch.

Water Bottles: Over 250 students have ordered John English water bottles. These metal water bottles are reusable each and every day. Students who purchase these bottles help our environment by reducing the use of plastic water bottles and by donating $2.00 from the $10.00 purchase price to World Wildlife Federation Water Fund. It is great to see that John English cares about the environment at home and in other countries.

Special Education Advisory Committee Survey: Periodically the TDSB reviews our special education delivery model with a goal of providing the best possible support for our students. Parents of students with special education needs are invited to provide their input into this process through a number of ways. One opportunity for input is provided through the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) survey. If you wish to complete the survey it is available at: On the right hand side of the landing page is a section entitled SEAC News and the first item mentioned is the SEAC survey. We thank you for your time and input.

Sports Update: Congratulations to our Grade 7 Girls Volleyball team who completed their season as the West Conference champions. It is always a great way to start the off-season when your final game is a victory. Our Grade 8 Girls Volleyball team narrowly missed out on a similar victory and finished the season as conference finalists. A final note of congratulations goes to our Grade 6 Boys basketball team who played two very strong games this past Wednesday, and returned to John English as the City Champions. Thank you to Mr. Poyser and Mr. DaSilva for all their work with the team. Well done boys, you have set high expectations for next year.
