Welcome Back! It was great to see so many happy and rested students return to school on Monday, March 20th. When speaking with the students it was clear that everyone enjoyed the break but it was also equally clear that students were excited to return to the learning and activities of John English.
Water Bottles: Our John English water bottles have arrived! Water bottles were distributed by Mme Way’s class to students on Thursday this past week to those students who had pre-ordered. Students are encouraged to print their name on their bottle to assist with return should they become lost. John English now has three water bottle filling stations in the school. As the warm weather approaches our bottles and filling stations will be well used. Thank you to Mme Way, Ms. West and the students of Mme Way for their work with our water bottle initiative.
Earth Hour 10 Year Anniversary: Earth Hour is a global World Wildlife Fund climate change initiative that originated in Sydney, Australia in 2007, with 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses switching their lights out to draw attention to global warming. It has become an international movement celebrated in over 172 countries worldwide, and is the world’s largest movement for the environment. Earth Hour helps us to build awareness of the connection between energy use and climate change. When we practise using less electricity (and other sources of energy such as oil and gas), we do our small part to slow climate change.
On Friday, March 24th, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., all non-essential lights were turned out at John English to help us increase our use of natural lighting throughout the day. Many classes brainstormed about small concrete steps that they can take at school or at home to reduce their carbon footprint. Discussions were held related to waste reductions (3R’s), energy conservation, and sustainable transportation. A countdown for the official time of 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time, Saturday, March 25th and the opportunity to register your support by adding earth hour to your social media feel can be found at the following website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-S_Zwa9zmI . Student and Parent Census: The TDSB is organizing a Census for Grade 4 – 8 students as well as for parents, guardians or caregivers of JK – 6 students. The census for the Grade 4 – 8 students will be administered in the school the week of April 3, 2017. Parent census forms have been sent home this week or will come home early next week. Attached is the letter that was sent home with your children earlier this week with information about the census. Parents are asked to review this information carefully.
Important Dates: At the end of the Friday Update is a list of important dates. The list now extends to the end of June. Students and parents are asked to note these dates for future reference. If further events are added, the list of dates will be updated.

Sports Update: Our Grade 8 and Grade 6 Co-ed Volleyball teams finished the season as conference finalists. All the players should be proud of their effort and success. Thank you to Mme Smith, Ms. Sharda, Mme Gitto and Mme DaSilva for their coaching efforts. A final note of congratulations goes to our Grade 6 Boys basketball team who played two very strong games this past Wednesday, and returned to John English as the City Champions. Thank you to Mr. Poyser and Mr. DaSilva for all their work with the team. Well done boys, you have set high expectations for next year.
