Friday, March 31, 2017 – John English Weekly Update

Dental Screening: Beginning on April 6th and continuing until April 21st the Public Health dental nurses will be in the school to screen all students. If the nurses notice a concern they will provide written contact to parents for follow up.

Water Bottles: Our John English water bottles arrived last week. And in most cases our students have been able to use their bottle without any difficulties. In some cases where the bottle has a cover and a pop up top, the plastic tether that is attached to the cover has broken very easily. We are in contact with the distributer who is sending a replacement screw top at this point in time. They are looking into the concern and are working on a solution to the problem. If you have concerns with the cap of your child’s water bottle please have them speak to their homeroom teacher to have the matter resolved.

Pink Day T-Shirts: Thank you to all those who have ordered Pink Day t-shirts. The deadline for ordering has now passed as we need to provide the supplier with enough time to make the shirts. As a result of all the orders and due to some donations we will be donating $500.00 to Kids Help Phone. We thank Mme DiMarco and the students of her class for their work organizing our Pink Day events.

Concours d’Art Oratoire: Grace, Tatiana, Radka and Alison represented John English at the Concours d’Art Oratoire at the Civic Centre this week. These students were well prepared for the French oral presentations. We wish Alison and Radka much success during the next stage at Glendon College on May 6th.

Citizenship Ceremony: On March 29th, John English was the location for a Canadian citizenship ceremony. We welcomed over 35 new Canadian citizens in partnership with the IODE. We thank our Grade 5 students for their work in preparing for the ceremony and making the event a little more special than most with their song and words. Addy and Jack spoke very well as they told the audience what makes Canada a great place to live. Thank you to Mme Smith for all of her work with the ceremony.

The Kilometre Club: The kilometre club is a running club for students in Grades 3–6. Their goal is to train for the Healthy Schools 5K Run. Mme D’Sa will be supervising the kilometre club. Students should listen for announcements if they would like to participate.

Sports Update: Congratulations to our chess team who, for the first time in many years, participated in the TDSB Chess competition. Our players have been practising for a few months and were in competition with other teams who had received professional coaching. Our intermediate team finished 4th out of 10 teams. Our students not only played well individually, but played well as a team. They encouraged each other, continued to practise between rounds and modelled respectful behaviour during the competition. Thank you to all of our participants and to Mr. Chan for his work managing the team. Our Co-ed Senior Volleyball team played in a tournament this week and won their final game in a come from behind tie-breaker. All the players can be proud of their effort.
