Bike to School Week May 29th – June 2nd:Many students participated in the TDSB Bike to School week. Biking is a wonderful way to travel to and from school if it can be done safely. Students continue to be encouraged to make use of our bike racks and to use their bicycles to travel to and from school throughout the warmer weather.

Bike Giveaway: Congratulations to Melissa and Serena who received a new bike after submitting essays answering the question, `Why I Need a Bike`. Thank you to all the students for their submissions. We know that biking is an excellent form of exercise and is a good form of transportation in our busy city.

Fibonacci (Grade 5) and Pythagoras (Grade 6): Congratulations to all the students who participated in our recent math contest. In Grade 5, our top three students were Sawyer (203rd out of 13,000 students) and Lilit and Jack. In the Grade 6 contest, John English placed 138th out of 874 schools. Our top students were Anabelle and Abigail (311th of 19,000) and Malcolm and a tie between Rushan and Daphne. More information is available at

K – 6 Playday: On June 7th, John English will be holding its annual Playday. This day is a fun event for students to enjoy self-selected play activities at no cost to themselves. Right-To-Play is a global charitable organizationthat uses sport and play to educate and empower children and youth to overcome poverty, conflict and disease.

This year for Playday, we will be holding an optional loonie/toonie drive in support of Right-to-Play.

Please consider sending in a loonie/toonie on June 7th to help support this worthwhile cause that makes a positive impact on children around the world.

Healthy Bites: The Healthy Bites lunch program provides a well-balanced, nutritious lunch for our students at a minimal cost. Healthy Bites Registration for Grade 1–8 students in the 2017/18 school year will start soon. The attached form was sent home with students this week. Students are reminded to be prepared to be at school prior to 8:00 a.m. as the buses will need to be loaded and then depart by 8:15 a.m. sharp. All students have been given a packing list and are reminded to review the list and bring with them clothing that is appropriate for the various activities in which they will partake. Students are expected to return to the school by 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 8. We expect all of our students will have a wonderful experience on this trip.

Volunteer Breakfast: Thank you to all those parents and community members who continue to support John English through the donation of your time and energy. Your support of our students and school is greatly appreciated. We hope that you enjoyed coffee, tea and a bite to eat as you listened to entertainment provided by the students in Mr. Stamatopoulos’ and Mme Smith’s classes. We thank Ms. McLeggon for her musical direction.

Sports Update: The first year of the John English Ultimate Frisbee team saw 29 students enthusiastically participate in a tournament on Thursday, June 1st. Although the team did not advance, their spirit was recognized and appreciated by all in attendance. Thank you to Mr. Nunes, Mr. Ursino and Mme Way. Mme Gitto, our Senior Girls’ soccer coach, reported that the team played valiantly in their quarter final match losing on the 8th penalty kick. The girls can be proud of their effort on the pitch. Congratulations to our Junior Girls soccer team who won their quarter-final game by a score of 2–1 and will now advance to the semi-finals under the guidance of coach Mme Lemieux.
