John English Helps Canada Celebrate 150 Years: For the past three months the students and staff of John English JMS have been drawing self-portraits. Each of these portraits personified the skills, talents and abilities of our students. All of the 923 portraits where then used as mosaic pieces to create a tribute to Canada on the occasion of the country’s 150 birthday. Each mosaic piece helped to create a wonderful mural for all to see and can be seen as an analogy as to the way our country was built. The grand unveiling of the mural occurred on Tuesday, June 13th with many students, teachers, Trustee Gough and CTV looking on. A story about the John English mural has been posted on the TDSB website.

Kindergarten Learning Reports: For the past few years the Ministry of Education has been reviewing the Kindergarten program and has updated the curriculum. The final piece of the program to be updated is the Kindergarten Report. At the end of the school year, our Kindergarten students will receive the new reports which focus on four areas of learning: Belonging and Contributing; Self–Regulation and Well–Being; Demonstrating Literacy and Mathematics Behaviours; Problem Solving and Innovating. Further information about Kindergarten assessment and progress updates is attached.

Are You Moving?: As we continue to plan for the 2017–2018 school year it is important that we are made aware of any changes in our student population and to assist any students with a transition to a new school. If you are expecting to move prior to September, please contact the school office with details.

Lost and Found and Locker Clean Out: Parents may be happy to see some long lost items returning home this week and next. Students are being encouraged to check the lost and found for items that have been left behind such as lunch boxes, coats, and other clothing. As the year comes to an end, students are also encouraged to clean out their lockers and desks and to take home any completed work and personal belongings. Cleaning and organizing is a habit that takes only a few minutes a day but pays dividends that last a lifetime.

22 Division Open House:Officer Rich invites all students and families to the 22 Division Police Open House. The event will take place on Saturday, June 17th from 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. There will be food and entertainment for all. More information is available in the attached flyer.

Dance-A-Thon: Our Kindergarten toGrade 5 studentsparticipated in our annual Dance-A-Thon on Friday, June 16th. It was great fun for all the students as they moved to music, showed off their skills to their friends and enjoyed the exercise for the day. We thank the School Council for organizing this event for our students and we thank our John English community for supporting this fundraising event.

Final Pizza Lunch: Our pizza lunches have been a tremendous success this year. We thank all of our volunteers for the tremendous help each month as they served over 150 pizzas in less than 20 minutes. Without all your assistance these days would not be possible. A special thank you goes to Ms. Canrinus who has been the mastermind behind all of our special pizza lunch days.

Sports Update: Congratulations to our track and field students who competed in the city finals this past week. John English sent 8 athletes to the City Championships. Congratulations to all our students for this accomplishment: Hannah F. 2nd – 200 m; Roman 2nd – 1500 m; Ethan – personal best 100 m; Caroline 5th – 200 m; Pamela 7th – 110 hurdles; Malcolm 7th – 400 m; Haley F. 10th – 1500 m; Teija 4th – Standing jump.
