Friday, September 22nd 2017 – John English Update Twitter @JohnenglishJM

This Week’s Friday Update: Meet the Teacher, Albion Hills Grade 7 Trip, Terry Fox Walk, John English Musical, Grade 8 to 9 Information Nights, Employment Opportunity – Lunchroom Supervisor, Gym Uniforms, Trustee Ward Forum, Student Leadership, Sports Teams, and JOHN ENGLISH ROCKS, an event sponsored by our School Council.

Meet the Teacher Night – Thursday, September 21st: It was wonderful to see so many families during the evening of September 21st taking the opportunity to renew acquaintances from the community and previous years as they met with teachers for this year. We can be proud of our students as they took on a leadership role in the classroom and as tour guides around the school. Thank you to all those parents who contributed to the School Council bake sale and Pizza sale and to those who supported the sale by volunteering their time or baked goods. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. The next scheduled parent connection is November 30th and December 1st when teachers speak with parents about Progress Reports.

Albion Hills Grade 7 Trips: The weather at Albion Hills that greeted Ms. Sharda’s and Mme Romanick’s Grade 7 student was warm and sunny. Students enjoyed many cooperative and outdoor activities. They were excited to share stories of their adventures in the wilderness. They also had advice for Grade 7 students in the classes of Mr. Tang, Mme Sowah, Mme Hehn and Mme Piper. Highlights of the advice include: bring a pair of indoor shoes or slippers, be ready for 3 minute showers and remember to leave your phones at home. We know that all of our Grade 7 students will enjoy the upcoming trip.

Terry Fox Walk: Each year thousands of schools in Canada and millions of people throughout the world run, jog, walk and roll in many Terry Fox Runs in an effort to raise money for cancer research. On Friday, September 27th, John English will participate in the school’s annual Terry Fox walk. The walk will take place in the afternoon. Students will walk throughout the neighbourhood with the length of the walk dependent upon the grade of the student. Students are encouraged to make a $2.00 donation to the Terry Fox organization. Our goal is a modest $1000.00 for the school.

John English Musical 2017–2018: The long awaited announcement was made today; the John English musical extravaganza for this school year is … The Little Mermaid! Students who wish to audition should listen to the announcements each morning for audition times and locations.

Grade 8 to 9 Information Nights: The transition from Grade 8 to 9 is an exciting time for both parents and students, offering many choices and opportunities. While it may seem early in the year, we want to offer students and their families time to thoughtfully consider their options. Ms. Bryer, our school guidance counsellor, will be meeting with all Grade 8 classes in the next few weeks to outline the process and provide information to the students about making choices for Grade 9. There will also be an information evening offered to parents in October. Look for a date coming soon!

In order to provide specific information about secondary schools and programs, all secondary schools in the Toronto District School Board offer open house evenings. This is an excellent opportunity to visit schools of interest and hear directly from their staff about the programs, courses and extracurricular opportunities that are offered. We know that this can be a busy time for families, so to facilitate planning, here is a link to the list of dates of open house evenings and times for all schools in the TDSB.

Employment Opportunity – Lunchroom Supervisors: The Toronto District School Board is seeking qualified Lunchroom Supervisors to work with students during the lunch hour. RATE OF PAY: $11.40/hour (First 30 shifts); then $19.05/hour and shifts are 1 hour and 15 minutes. At John English, we are always in need of individuals who are interested in becoming a Lunchroom Supervisor, both for permanent lunch hour work, as well as to fill in when one of our regular supervisors is absent. Please contact Ms. Jenkins in addition to applying online at

Trustee Gough Ward Forum October 4th – 7:00 p.m.: John English JMS will be hosting Trustee Gough’s Ward Forum entitled Foundations for a Great School Year. A panel of superintendents, principals, teachers, and parents will speak about the beginning of the school year and setting a solid foundation for success. The panel will be open to questions from parents.

Student Leadership: Throughout the year there are many opportunities for our students to take on leadership roles in the school. We thank our Grade 7 and 8 students who are Kindergarten Lunch helpers and our students who volunteer in Healthy Bites. We also are appreciative of our Playground Leaders – PALS and our Safety Patrollers. In the John English community we work together to make the school the place to be.

Sports Update:

Gym Uniforms: Our gym uniforms were on sale in the cafeteria during Meet the Teacher night. These items are so popular that we have sold out of many sizes and we have needed to order more. We thank you for your patience as we contact our supplier with a rush order. The shirts and shorts should be here soon.

Team Practices: The schedules and the event dates are being communicated to students by our teacher coaches. Many sports teams are practising at this time of the year, they are;
