October 6th – P.A. Day: October 6th is a Professional Activity day and the school will be closed to students. The teachers will be engaged in school improvement planning and health and safety awareness activities.

Etobicoke Outdoor Grade 7 Trips: All of our Grade 7 students have now returned from their outdoor education experience at Albion Hills. Students had a chance to use compasses, GPS location devices, ride fat-tire mountain bikes, participate in cooperative games and learn strategies to support our environment. We congratulate all the students who represented John English proudly and respectfully. We know that our students returned home excited and ready for a rest.

French Immersion: Students who are interested in applying for French Immersion can access the application online at The application for French Immersion (Junior Kindergarten students eligible to apply) will be open beginning October 30, 2017. The application deadline closes on December 1, 2017. See attached flyer for more information.

Terry Fox Walk: John English students took to the streets and pathways in the community in support of Terry Fox’s dream to find a cure for cancer. Our students represented the school well with a show of enthusiasm and spirit. Thank you to all students and families for donations that surpassed our goal of $1000.00

Absences from School: When a student is absent from school our automated system will call parents with amessage requiring parents to acknowledge the absence. Please ensure that you listen to the entire message before hanging up the phone. Students who leave school during the school day for appointments or illness are required to sign out at the main school office. If parents wish children to come home early for any reason we ask that you contact the main school office at 416-394-7660 which will allow us to contact your child and record the attendance.

John English Musical 2017–2018: Auditions for ‘The Little Mermaid’ will take place each lunch time from October 10th through to October 27th. Students are to sign up for an audition time outside of Ms. McLeggon’s music room.

Pizza Lunch: Our first pizza lunch took place on Friday, September 29th. Thank you to our many volunteers who helped to deliver over 120 pizzas to our hungry students in under twenty minutes. Thank you to Ms. Canrinus for all of her efforts organizing our pizza days.

Grade 8 to 9 Information Nights – October 19th: The transition from Grade 8 to 9 is an exciting time for both parents and students, offering many choices and opportunities. While it may seem early in the year, we want to offer students and their families time to thoughtfully consider their options. Ms. Bryer, our school guidance counsellor, will be meeting with all Grade 8 classes in the next few weeks to outline the process and provide information to the students about making choices for Grade 9. Further information is in the flyer attached.

In order to provide specific information about secondary schools and programs, all secondary schools in the Toronto District School Board offer open house evenings. This is an excellent opportunity to visit schools of interest and hear directly from their staff about the programs, courses and extracurricular opportunities that are offered. We know that this can be a busy time for families, so to facilitate planning, here is a link to the list of dates of open house evenings and times for all schools in the TDSB.

Trustee Gough Ward Forum October 4th – 7:00 p.m.: John English JMS will be hosting Trustee Gough’s Ward Forum entitled Foundations for a Great School Year. A panel of superintendents, principals, teachers, and parents will speak about the beginning of the school year and setting a solid foundation for success.
