This Week’s Friday Update: School Cash Online, Personal Electronic Devices, Social Networking Safety Presentation – Paul Davis, School and Sibling Photos, Grade 8 Transition Information, Late Arrivals and Early Dismissals, French Immersion Information Night, Scholastic Book Fair, Quiznos Lunch Update, Pizza Day, Trustee Ward Forum, Sports Update, and JOHN ENGLISH ROCKS, an event sponsored by our School Council, Fresh From the Farm Update.
School Cash Online: John English is now set up to receive online payments for class excursions, school activities and fundraising activities. To register for School Cash Online, please visit parenthelp. Once you register you can use a debit or credit card to make your payments. As with all online payments there is a fee for this service. In most case the 2% charge is absorbed in the cost for the activity. Our goal is to make the process of payment for activities easier, safe and convenient. Attached is a one page instruction sheet for the School Cash Online process.
Personal Electronic Devices: In our quickly changing world access to a personal electronic device by students is becoming more and more common each day. Students use these devices to organize their days, to communicate with parents and to access information. Students are reminded that if they bring their device to school that they are responsible for securing it. Students are also reminded to avoid the distraction of these devices when they are responsible for other actions – i.e., students should eat their lunch prior to device use, students should take advantage of outdoor time for exercise prior to device use. In the classroom, teachers will let students know if the device can be used in the classroom. This will vary from teacher to teacher depending upon the classroom assignment or activity.
Social Networking Safety Presentation – Students and Parents Save This Date – Nov. 14th: Paul Davis, a noted Social Networking Safety expert will be presenting to students from Grade 4 to 8 on November 14th during the day and will also hold a presentation for parents in the evening. Paul is an outstanding presenter who has valuable information that is important for all to know who wish to use Social Media in a safe manner. Parents should make sure that they are able to attend this presentation. Further information is available at http://www.socialnetworkingsafety.net
School Photos/Sibling Photos: Our school photographer was here in early October and proofs of the photos were sent home this past week. If you were unhappy with the photographs and would like the picture re-taken, the photographer will be back on November 1st in the afternoon. Please make sure your child brings a signed note requesting a retake. Our photographer will also be available after 3:30 on that day for sibling photos. There is a $10.00 sitting fee for the sibling photos. If you would like to book an appointment for a sibling photo, please contact the school office to schedule a time.
Grade 8 Secondary School Visits and Transition Information: Attached are two documents that are important for our Grade 8 students and families and may be of interest to those students in Grade 6 and 7. The Highlights from our Transition Evening provide information about the timelines and process for Grade 9 applications and the 2017-2018 Secondary Info Evenings document is a listing of all the Secondary School Open House evenings. The information is provided to assist our Grade 8 students with making informed choices about next year.
Late Arrivals and Early Dismissal: Due to appointments or family situations, it may be necessary for students to arrive late to school. If a student arrives only a few minutes late to school they are to go directly to their homeroom class and the teacher will record the late arrival on the class attendance. If students arrive after 9:00 a.m. they should report directly to the main office in order to record their arrival and to avoid an automated call home. The office staff will issue a class admit slip. Parents are reminded to sign in their children in to or out of school at the main office. Thank you for your cooperation in assisting with our student safety.
French Immersion Information Night – November 6th: The French Immersion information night will be held at Etobicoke CI from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Please note the location change from previous practice. Students who are interested in applying for French Immersion can access the application online at http://www.tdsb.on.ca/pars. The application for French Immersion (Junior Kindergarten students eligible to apply) will be open beginning October 30, 2017. The application deadline is November 30, 2017.
Scholastic Book Fair – November 15-22. Interested in volunteering?
John English Junior Middle School is hosting the annual French and English Scholastic Book Fair this year from November 15th until November 22nd. This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase both English and French books, magazines, gifts etc. This is an important fundraiser for our school, funding purchases for both the library and the reading resource rooms. If you are interested in volunteering during this event, please contact leah to find out more. Each student will have the opportunity to visit the Book Fair with their class so please keep an eye on your child’s agenda to learn when their class visit is scheduled! Parents are welcome to browse the Book Fair as well. We will be open for parents at 8 a.m. on November 16, 20, 21 and 22 and after school until 4 pm on November 16, 20 and 21. We will also be open during the parent-teacher interviews on November 16th (3-8 p.m.) and on November 17th (8-11:30 a.m.) Thank you for your support!
Costume Parade: On Tuesday, October 31st we will be holding our annual costume parade for Kindergarten to Grade 5 students. The parade will begin at approximately 1:00 p.m. on the paved play area outside. Parents are welcomed to view the parade. If the weather is uncooperative the parade will take place in the auditorium. Students are reminded that costumes at school should allow faces to be seen and to avoid accessories that are unsafe. Parents who do not wish their children to participate in the parade should contact their child’s teacher and we will make alternate arrangements for the students. The parade will last approximately 30 minutes.
Annual Lakeshore Walk & Indoor Activities Fundraiser: This free event is taking place tomorrow – Saturday, October 28th. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
Quiznos Lunch Update: Our Quiznos lunch on October 20th that was run by the Grade 8 Eco team saw over 4754 sub lunches distributed to our students. As a result of their efforts and your participation, John English was able to donate $784.35 to the Toronto Foundation for Student Success Feed Tomorrow campaign. Thank you to Ms . West for supervising the special lunch and to all the students for participating and thinking of others.
Pizza Day – October 27th: Once again over 140 pizzas were served to our student population by our faithful army of volunteers. We thank all of our parents and students who assisted with Pizza Day.
Trustee Gough Ward Forum: Trustee Gough will be holding her second Ward Forum of the year on Monday, November 13, 2017 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Lambton-Kingsway JMS (Library), 525 Prince Edward Drive North. All parents are invited.
Cross-Country: Our 11 Cross-Country runners braved the windy, cold weather on Thursday, October 26th at the City Championships. All the runners should be proud of their accomplishments and we look forward to even more John English athletes on the team.
