Scholastic Book Fair Update: This past week our book fair was held at the school and was visited by every student in the building. It was great to see faces light up with enthusiasm as they entered the room. On behalf of the School Council we thank our many hard working parent and Grade 8 volunteers, Lisa Balbuck, Joan Raymond, Ms. Jenkins, Mme. McLeggon, and the Book Fair co-chairs Leah Kirkpatrick and Melanie Boyd-Brown, who, by working together, helped us run another successful French and English Book Fair for JEJMS! And a huge thank you to everyone who came out and supported this important school fundraising activity. We raised over $3000 this year which will be used to support the library and reading resource rooms. Thank you very much!
December 1st Professional Development Day – School Closed: On December 1st, the TDSB has scheduled a professional development day for all teachers. Parents are reminded the school will be closed to students on this day.
Movember Support: The State of men’s health is in crisis. Men die on average six years earlier than women. In addition, prostate cancer rates are predicted to double in the next 15 years. Testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50 years. Poor mental health also leads to half a million men taking their own life every year. The Movember Foundation is uniquely placed to raise global awareness of these issues. They fund a number of programs across the world in order to support men and the fight against cancer, as well as, poor mental health.
The Student Council will be helping to raise funds for the Movember Foundation. From November 27-30, students will be selling bracelets and moustaches for $1.00 to Grades 1 – 8 in the cafeteria at lunchtime. Kindergarten teachers will only be selling bracelets for their students. Contact your child’s teacher if you are interested.
Please help support The Movember Foundation! Your Student Council.
Employment Opportunity – Lunchroom Supervisors (LRS): At John English, we are always in need of individuals who are interested in becoming a Lunchroom Supervisor, both for permanent lunch hour work, as well as to fill in when one of our regular supervisors is absent. A Piece of Mimico History: John English JMS continues to run on a daily basis in a school building formerly known as Mimico High School. Many former Mimico High School students still live in the south Etobicoke area and are keenly aware of the history of both John English and Mimico High School. During 1967, a group of young men from Mimico High School’s senior basketball team completed a 45–1 season capturing both the Etobicoke and Toronto championships. Their coach and former Mimico High School teacher, Ted Schmidt, has written a book about the team’s success, his reflections upon his time in Mimico and his thoughts about sport and the world today, entitled ‘The Season.’ On Saturday, November 25th, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., in the John English gym, Ted will be holding a book launch. If you are interested in hearing about a little bit of Mimico history you are welcome to join us for the afternoon.
Do You Know the Speed Limit on Mimico Ave?: Mimico Avenue is the one way street from Lakeshore Blvd. to Royal York Road that is on the north side of John English JMS. The speed limit for most residential streets is 50 km/h. The limit for streets near school zones is 40 km/h. The speed limit on Mimico Avenue is 30 km/h. Many vehicles using Mimico Avenue seem to be exceeding this speed limit and consequently are jeopardizing the safety of our students who use the Mimico Avenue crosswalk. If you are driving along Mimico Avenue, please adhere to the posted speed limit to make the road safe for pedestrians and vehicle traffic.
‘Tis the Season Art Show: The annual children’s art show and community open house at the Assembly Hall is happening next week. The Open House is scheduled for Wednesday, November 29th from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome; come out and vote for your favourite artwork. John English will have many submissions on display.
School Winter Concert: Wednesday, December 13th is the day that has been set aside for the John English Winter Concert. This concert will see our Kindergarten to Grade 5 students presenting their very best. Please remember that the school parking lot will be full with staff vehicles. Parents are encouraged to walk to the school or park on the side streets in the neighbourhood. We look forward to seeing you this evening.
