December 1st Professional Development Day – School Closed: December 1st was a professional development day for teachers. The school will re-open for students on Monday, December 4th at regular hours.

Movember Support: Thank you to all the students and families who supported our Student Council Movember initiative. Many students purchased moustaches and bracelets in support of mental health and the fight against prostate cancer.

Candygrams: Our Student Council is busy with the holiday season and will be selling candygrams in the next two weeks. Students may purchase candy grams for 50 cents. From Monday, December 4th – Friday, December 8th candygrams will be sold to Grade 1 – 3 students in classrooms on specific dates. Our Grade 4 – 8 students will be able to purchase candygrams from December 11th – 15th. Please see the dates below. The candygrams will be delivered on December 22nd

Employment Opportunity – Lunchroom Supervisors (LRS): At John English, we are always in need of individuals who are interested in becoming a Lunchroom Supervisor, both for permanent lunch hour work, as well as to fill in when one of our regular supervisors is absent. Beginning in January, we are in particular need of Lunchroom Supervisors who are available for daily work. The hours are 11:25 – 12:40, for the main cafeteria and 11:20 – 12:35, for the kindergarten lunchroom. The rate of pay is: $11.40/hour (First 30 shifts); then $19.05/hour. ‘Tis the Season Art Show: The annual children’s art show and community open house at the Assembly Hall is happening this week. Although the official opening was on Wednesday, November 29th student artwork will be on display until December 18th. John English had 10 of our student artists original pieces selected for display. Student work from Grade 2 to Grade 8 can be seen on the main floor and the second floor. Congratulations to all of our artists for their efforts.

School Winter Concert: Wednesday, December 13th is the day that has been set aside for the John English Winter Concert. The Kindergarten to Grade 5 and Grade 8 Band concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. with our Kindergarten students leading the way. Unfortunately due to Ms. Christmas’ illness the Grade 8 Strings group will not be performing at this time. Please take note of the time change. In an earlier update the start time was incorrectly listed as 7:00 p.m. Please remember that the school parking lot will be full with staff vehicles. Parents are encouraged to walk or park on the side streets in the neighbourhood. We look forward to seeing you this evening.

Trustee Gough Ward 3 Forum: Please find attached the poster for the Ward 3 Council meeting which is being held on Monday, January 22, 2018, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Etobicoke School of the Arts (Library). The focus of the meeting will be the TDSB’s Enhancing Equity Initiative.

Toy Drive: John English has been asked to support the Toronto Police 22 Division 2017 Christmas Toy Drive. We have been asked for donations of New Unwrapped Toys to help ensure that every child has a gift to open this Christmas. If you would like to support this community initiative, toys can be dropped off in the main foyer until December 20th.

27th Annual Etobicoke Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade and Free “Skate With Santa” – Saturday, December 2nd: As December is here, many fun winter activities are happening in the Mimico community. We hope that you have time to enjoy what the area has to offer on the weekend.

John English Lunch Time Programs: John English staff and others provide a variety of lunch time activities for our students every week. Below is a list of activities that take place at John English.

Ms. Sternig opens her art room Day 1 and 3 for all Grades she teaches and it is open on all Days except Day 5 for Grade 7 and 8 students.

Our school library is open at lunch from 11:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for students in Grades 4 – 8 who wish to work in a quiet, cellphone free setting, to complete homework or enjoy a good book. Interested students need to get a library pass from their teacher, each day they plan to attend.

Sports Update

Senior Boys Volleyball: Congratulations to our Senior boys Volleyball team who continue to be undefeated in the qualifying rounds with a record of 16-0! Great Job Boys!! The team advances to the quarter finals next week. Ms. Sharda and Mme Gitto look forward to a continued stellar effort from the team.

Junior Girls Basketball: Our Junior Girls had an energetic and enthusiastic season, unfortunately it came to an end after the first tournament. All the girls can be proud of their effort. Thank you to Mme DaSilva for her coaching efforts.

Hockey Tryouts: The final hockey tryout will be held on December 5th

Lego Robotics: Our Lego Robotics teams has increased their practice time in preparation for the Lego Robotics competition on Saturday, December 9th. The team is practising Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at lunch and after school next week.

Winter Coat Drive 2017: The cooler weather has officially arrived! When you dig through your closet and find winter items your family no longer needs, please consider donating to the Winter Coat Drive hosted by CarQuest and Children’s Breakfast Clubs. We are collecting coats, sweaters, hats, mitts and scarves IN ALL SIZES. There is a donation box in the front foyer of our school. For more information please visit:
