This Week’s Friday Update: Welcome Back, Facility Update, Student Anxiety, John English Calendar, Facility Update 2 – Roof Repair, Trustee Gough Ward Forum, Free Adult Classes, Kindergarten Registration
Welcome Back: Even though Monday, January 8th greeted us with 5–10 cm of snow and below zero temperatures, our students returned to school with a smile on their face and ready to learn. We hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday season and some time with family and friends was relaxing. For those who experienced difficulties we hope that you were able to resolve these matters with the support of those around you. We thank our caretakers for their work preparing the school for the return of our students and staff.
Facility Update: Unfortunately, due to the very cold temperatures over the break, we experienced some frozen pipes and flooding. As a result of lower than normal temperatures in a few classrooms, it was necessary to relocate some classes for morning lessons on Monday, January 8th. The problem was remedied by approximately 11:00 a.m. Some classes returned for the afternoon, while others continued in their temporary locations. All impacted classes were back to normal operations on Tuesday. Our maintenance staff also needed to repair a broken pipe due to freezing. This resulted in the water being turned off for approximately 10 minutes during the day. We continue to work on a problem in Gym #2, where Ms. Broughton instructs physical education classes. For the next few weeks she will be teaching Health as the problem is remedied. Hopefully the repairs to our heating and water systems will be our last for quite some time.
Student Anxiety: For the past few years, student mental health, stress and anxiety have been receiving more attention in academic research and the media. All parents want their children to succeed and to have far more positive experiences than negative. However, it is important to remember learning may often occur through difficulty or failure. As parents and teachers we try to support students in these difficult situations with the ultimate goal being learning. When supporting our children we try to teach them to overcome anxiety rather than trying to escape the triggers. The ability to manage discomfort is a key skill to learn that will be helpful in the present and pay dividends in the future. Much research has be done in this area that provides suggestions to support our children.
John English Calendar: You may have been wondering what happened to the monthly calendar that was sent home to families with our end of the month Friday update. We continue to move the John English communication away from paper and more online. The calendar is now available on our website http://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/johnenglish . The calendar can be seen in a daily agenda format on the home landing page or in a monthly format on our calendar, newsletter, communication page. We are working to make sure all significant dates are on this calendar to help you plan busy schedules.
Facility Update 2 – Roof Repair: Two years ago, John English JMS received roofing improvements to part of the building. We are excited to tell you further roof repairs will take place this year. Construction will begin on approximately January, 15, 2018 and be completed within approximately 42 days. The start date for construction and the completion time for the construction are subject to change, depending on weather conditions.
Over time, this roof upgrade will ensure a continued safe learning environment for our students. This is part of a major roof repair initiative that’s happening in the TDSB this year. Because of the volume of school roofs being repaired this year, work must continue throughout the school year during daylight hours. However, we are making every effort to do as much work outside of regular school hours as possible.
The roofing process can cause strong and unpleasant odours, which, at times, may enter the building. Please be assured that there is no risk to our students and we are working with our facilities and health and safety teams to reduce discomfort including keeping windows and doors closed, ensuring all air intake openings are closed and that the building’s ventilation system is on recirculation mode to ensure no outside air is introduced. Alternate accommodations will be made for students in the event of sensitivity to the fumes.
You can also find more information about the initiative at http://www.tdsb.on.ca/AboutUs/FacilityServices/RoofRepairs.aspx. Should you have any concerns about your child’s health and safety related to this work, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Trustee Gough Ward 3 Forum: The Ward 3 Council meeting which is being held on Monday, January 22, 2018, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Etobicoke School of the Arts (Library). The focus of the meeting will be the TDSB’s Enhancing Equity Initiative. Please see attached flyer.
Kindergarten Registration: Applications for registration to Junior Kindergarten at John English in September 2018 are now being accepted. If you have a child born in 2014 please call the school as soon as possible so that we may assign you an appointment day and time. Pupils presently enrolled in Junior Kindergarten do not need to register for Senior Kindergarten. However, a child who did not attend Junior Kindergarten this school year may be registered for Senior Kindergarten if born in 2013.
If you do not have a child who qualifies for admission to either Junior or Senior Kindergarten, but know of a neighbour whose child may qualify, it would be appreciated if you would pass this information on to them.
Free Adult Classes: Essential Skills Upgrading free adult classes are available at many different locations throughout the city. These classes are funded by Employment Ontario. Further information is available at http://www.upgrademyskills.ca Parents are always role models to children.
