February 7th – Winter Walk and Global Play Day: The John English K – 6 Winter Walk-Global Playday was a tremendous success this past week. Students enjoyed their time walking to and from school, walking around the school in the winter weather and participating in unstructured play. The result was an invigorated group of students who experienced the physical and mental benefits of exercise and play. Thank you to our parent volunteers who supported our Global play day and to our Eco Team for organizing our Winter Walk Day.

The Great Waters Challenge:Mme Way’s class participated in Waterlution’s Great Waters Challenge after learning about the Humber watershed on a fall field trip. For the first two challenges, students studied many things related to water and completed awesome projects on various topics: Treaties and Land Claims, Connections to water in Toronto, Watershed health, Pollution sources, Etobicoke and Mimico community history, Famous landmarks along our shorelines, and many more. The students were awarded a prize for their hard work from Waterlution! Congratulations to all the students who went above and beyond to learn and share about our connections to water.

Stay tuned for our work on Challenge #3 as we approach World Water Day in March!

Forest of Reading: Our Forest of Reading participants number over 10 students. Each day our students read through a select choice of fiction, non-fiction and picture books with the goal of being able to vote for their favourite book. Students can read in the library each day at lunch time. April 23rd is the voting day for all school aged programs. The Festival of Trees Ceremony is happening in Toronto on May 17th, 2018.

Bag2School Update: John English has concluded our first Bag2School clothing and textile drive. Thanks to all who donated! In total, our donations will divert approximately one ton of textiles from the landfills and, in addtion to this we also received $150 for the items donated! All proceeds will aid environmental initiatives throughout our local school community. We hope to achieve EcoSchools Platinum status for a second year in a row. If you missed your chance to contribute, we are currently planning a second drive – just in time for spring cleaning. Look for details coming in April.
