John English Weekly Update – March 2, 2018

This Week’s Friday Update: Spirit Week, Grade 1, 2, 3 Black History Presentation, Dental Screening, The Big Crunch, Screenagers – the Movie, Summer School, John English Lunch time Programs, Sports Update

Spirit Week: John English students, families and staff havetremendous spirit and pride. Next week beginning on Monday, March 5th through to Friday, March 9th our school council will be holding spirit week activities each day. We know our students will enjoy these days.

Monday, March 5th – Jersey Day, wear your favourite team uniform for the day.

Tuesday, March 6th – Student vs. Teacher volleyball game in Gym 1 beginning at 11:50 a.m. There is a donation of $1.00 to attend as an audience member. Donations will support our Physical Education program.

Wednesday, March 7th – Crazy Hat Day, wear your favourite crazy hat.

Thursday, March 8th – Student vs. Teacher basketball game in Gym 1 beginning at 11:50 a.m. There is a donation of $1.00 to attend as an audience member. Donations will support our Physical Education program.

Friday, March 9th – Backwards Day, wear your clothes backwards on this day.

Grade 1, 2 and 3 Black History Month Presentation: John English is extending a special note of thanks to Ms. Lytle and Mrs. Abbott for their Black History Month presentation to the Grade 1, 2 and 3 students. During the presentation, students learned about Albert Jackson’s journey from slavery on the famed Underground Rail and his struggle for justice to become Toronto’s first Black postman over 135 years ago. Both students and teachers enjoyed the wonderful learning opportunity. We thank Ms. Lytle and Ms. Abbott for the donation of books to the school library.

Dental Screening: Toronto Public Health provides dental programs to children from Kindergarten to Grade 8. One program is dental screening. A Public Health nurse performs this task. Dental screening will take place at John English from March 19th to March 29th. Further information is in the attached letter from Toronto Public Health.

The Big Crunch: John English students participated in The Big Crunch 2018 courtesy of our Healthy Bites lunch program. The Big Crunch is an initiative of Foodshare which aims to increase access to, knowledge of and consumption of fruits and vegetables. Our John English students had the opportunity to join in the apple crunching that occurred across the board and province. Further information is available at the Foodshare website

Screenagers – the Movie: Save the date of Thursday, May 17. Screenagers (flyer attached), will be available for viewing in the John English JMS auditorium beginning at 7:00 p.m. Screenagers is a documentary film about growing up in the digital age. We thank TDSB Chair Pilkey, Trustee Gough and Trustee Glover for hosting the screening. We look forward to a wonderful night of learning.

Summer School: Although it is only the beginning of March, many families are beginning to plan for the summer months. This year, John English JMS will be home to the KKSA Leadership Arts Academy from July 4 – 27. Attached is information about the program. Any questions should be directed to 416-394-7979

Ms. Sternig opens her art room Day 1 and 3 for all Grades she teaches and it is open on all Days except Day 5 for Grade 7 and 8 students.

Our school library is open at lunch from 11:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for students in Grades 4 – 8 who wish to work in a quiet, cellphone free setting, to complete homework or enjoy a good book. Interested students need to get a library pass from their teacher, each day they plan to attend.

Sports Update

Boys Grade 7 Basketball: Congratulations to our Grade 7 Boys Basketball team and to Mr. Poyser, their coach. On Friday, March 2nd the team played a hard fought game against a strong team from C.R. Marchant. Our team was victorious and took home the title of Grade 7 Conference Champions! The City Championships will be played on Wednesday, March 7.

Badminton Intramurals: Mr. Nunes is organizing badminton intramurals:

Grade 5 students: Thursday at lunch

Grade 6 students: Friday at Lunch

Grade 7 students: Thursday after school

Grade 8 students: Friday after school

School Council

Marlies Game: John English Families are invited to purchase tickets to John English Day at the Marlies game on Sunday March 25th at 4:00 p.m. The tickets are available for $20.00 each and can be purchased through the Cashonline system. There is a March 2nd deadline for purchasing tickets. Students and parents are reminded that families are responsible for their own transportation to and from the game and for supervision at the game. If the school community purchases over 150 tickets, 2 selected students will be able to ride the Zamboni during intermission! Please see attached flyer for more details.

Lunch Time Program

Art in Action: Classes will be held at lunchtime from 11:30-12:30 at John English for grade 1 -8 students. They will be held on Mondays, February 26-May 28 or Fridays, April 6-May 25. The cost is $135.00 for 8 weeks which includes all supplies. As this is a program run by Art in Action please send all inquiries directly to: artinactiontoronto
