March Break: John English will be closed to students from March 12th to March 16th.  The March Break is a time for students to take a break from school and to enjoy time with family.  We wish everyone a very happy and healthy March Break.  School resumes on March 19th at regular school hours.

JETV is on the Air:  Our Grade 8 students, using their technical skills, are providing a video update of happenings at John English.  The John English TV segments will be available on Youtube.  The segments are unlisted and therefore cannot be searched by the general public.  The inaugural episode of JETV is available to John English students and parents here.  We look forward to more segments of our JETV as our videographers, reporters, editors and producers develop their skills.

Daylight Savings Time: Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 11th – remember to move your clocks forward 1 hour.

Spirit Week:  Thank you to our Student Council for their work organizing our Spirit Week.  John English students definitely have spirit.  They celebrated their school spirit this week by wearing their team shirts and crazy hats.  Students also cheered on the student/teacher volleyball and basketball games.  Thank you to all students who participated in these events making John English a great place to be and to our Student Council for their efforts organizing the week.

Canadian Legion Essay Contest:  Congratulations to Kye Arienda-Jones who received 1st Place recognition in the Junior Remembrance Day Essay contest at the Royal Canadian Legion Zone level.  We are proud of our students’ participation in community activities and pleased that Kye has represented John English well.

Dental Screening: A reminder to all parents that beginning March 19th through to March 29th Toronto Public Health dental hygienists will be at John English to carry out a screening program that is offered to students in accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Health requirements for mandatory health programs. The dental hygienist will assess the need for topical fluoride, scaling, sealant and any other obvious dental needs. As a follow up to the screening, only parents whose children are identified as requiring dental services will be notified. A note to that effect will be sent home with your child/ren for your information and action. You may also receive a phone call from T.P.H. dental staff to assist you in accessing care. For further information, please find attached a letter from TPH.

World Water Day: John English will be recognizing World Water Day on Thursday, March 22nd, a day to focus our attention on water issues. Today, 2.1 billion people live without safe drinking water at home; affecting their health, education and livelihoods. Students will learn about strategies to take care of this precious resource and Mme Way’s class will be hosting a ‘water fair’. The EcoTeam will be selling refillable John English water bottles during the fair and at lunch for a cost of $10.00.  The price includes a $2.00 per bottle donation to charities that work to ensure clean water for all. Attached is an order form for parents of younger students, who may wish to place an order.

TDSB Earth Hour 2018: On Friday, March 23rd, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., TDSB Schools and offices are asked to go as electricity-free as possible for ONE HOUR. Earth Hour is a time to focus on energy conservation and slowing climate change, not just for the one hour, but as a part of our daily lives. At John English, as a Platinum EcoSchool, we already have many areas where we use natural lighting on a regular basis, but during Earth Hour students will be participating in a variety of activities related to caring for Planet Earth.

Screenagers – the Movie:  Save the date of May 17th.  Screenagers (flyer attached), will be available for viewing in the John English JMS auditorium beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Screenagers is a documentary film about growing up in the digital age.   We thank TDSB Chair Pilkey, Trustee Gough and Trustee Glover for hosting the screening.  We look forward to a wonderful night of learning.

Summer School:  Although it is only the beginning of March, many families are beginning to plan for the summer months.  This year, John English JMS will be home to the KKSA Leadership Arts Academy from July 4–27.  Attached is information about the program.  Any questions should be directed to 416-394-7979
