This Week’s Thursday Update: Good Friday / Easter Monday – School closed, John English Movie Night – April 13th – Ticket Going Fast!, Little Mermaid – Musical, Newcomer Club, Summer School, John English Lunch time Programs, Sports Update

Good Friday and Easter Monday Holiday: The school will closed on Friday, March 30th and Monday, April 2nd for Good Friday and Easter Monday. School will resume on April 3rd at regular hours.

John English Movie Night – April 13th: John English School Council is pleased to present Coco and a delicious Healthy Bites dinner, on Friday, April 13th. Tickets are $8.00/person or $25.00/family of four (tickets available that night: $10.00/person or $30.00/family of four). Parents can order tickets by using marieandtrevor

Little Mermaid – Musical: May 9th and 10th the Little Mermaid Musical production will grace the John English stage. Tickets are available to cast members beginning April 9th and will be available to the rest of the school beginning April 23rd. The John English musicals are always one of the highlights of the year.

Newcomer Youth and Kids Program: The TDSB’s Welcoming Communities for Newcomer Youth and Kids program is once again up and running at John English JMS. Sixteen students will be joining our Community Supervisor and ESL teacher, Ms. West for a recreational program that is designed to help ease some of the transitional challenges new Canadian students experience when integrating into the Canadian school system and Canadian culture. The club will be held on Mondays, starting April 9th and will run until June 18th. Activities will include arts & crafts, cooking, board games, English conversation circles and assistance with any homework during the lunch hour. After school, students will then enjoy the opportunity to play table tennis and basketball in Gym 2.

EcoSchool Update: John English School was recently visited by an auditor from the TDSB EcoSchools program who indicated that we are once again well on our way to achieving Platinum certification status, with an interim audit score of 93.80. The auditor highlighted our well-established EcoTeam, composed of eight staff members and student representation from across all grade levels, and outdoor learning spaces being used regularly by multiple grades and classes. Thanks to all members of the John English community for working together to make our school eco-friendly.

Summer School: Although it is only the beginning of March, many families are beginning to plan for the summer months. This year, John English JMS will be home to the KKSA Leadership Arts Academy from July 4–27. Ms. Sternig opens her art room Day 1 and 3 for all Grades she teaches and it is open on all Days except Day 5 for Grade 7 and 8 students.

Our school library is open at lunch from 11:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for students in Grades 4 – 8 who wish to work in a quiet, cellphone free setting, to complete homework or enjoy a good book. Interested students need to get a library pass from their teacher, each day they plan to attend.

Sports Update

Badminton Team Update: Congratulations to our Grade 7 and 8 Badminton Team members who played in tournaments this week. The Grade 8 team, with a 5 – 0 record were given a bye to the Conference finals on April 3. Our Grade 7 team advanced to the playoffs but lost a close match 3 – 2 and have ended their season. Coaches, Mr. Nunes and Mme DaSilva continue to see player improvement at each event and look forward to the Grade 5, 6 and 8 team events in the week of April 3 – 6.

Kilometre Club: The Kilometre running club will return to running each Friday beginning on April 6th, weather permitting. The Kilometre Club is a group of Grade 2 – 5 students who are interested in running for exercise and enjoyment. The club will continue for the next two month until June 8th. Mme D’sa is supervising the running club.

Track and Field Grade 4 and 5: The Grade 4 and 5 track and field tryouts have begun. Students have had an opportunity to tryout at lunch time this week and will have further opportunities next week. Mme D’Sa, Mme Easton, Mme Baillet and Mme DaSilva are working with the students. Students are to listen to the morning announcement and to check our announcement board for practice times.

Badminton Intramurals: Mr. Nunes is organizing badminton intramurals:

  • Grade 5 students: Thursday at lunch
  • Grade 6 students: Friday at Lunch
  • Grade 7 students: Thursday after school
  • Grade 8 students: Friday after school

School Council

Dinner and a Movie is Back! Continuing the success of previous movie nights, JE SAC is pleased to present Coco and a delicious Healthy Bites dinner, on Friday, April 13th. Tickets are $8.00/person or $25.00/family of four (tickets available that night: $10.00/person or $30.00/family of four). Flyers are attached to this update, and also coming home with your children this week, so be sure to check their backpacks!

Also, the John English EcoSchools is planning a second Bags2school campaign, which will begin on April 13th, families are invited to bring their used clothing and textile donations with them on Movie Night. Details to follow.

Volunteers needed!

The event begins officially at 5:30 p.m. but shifts can start as early as 3:00 p.m. and end when we close-up shop. Shifts include: food prep, food serving, clean-up and selling basket raffle tickets.

We also need help on Wednesday, April 11th starting at 5:00 p.m. to assemble the baskets for the basket raffle as well as folks to sell basket raffle tickets at lunch on Thursday, April 12th and Friday, April 13th
