Thank You: We send out a huge John English thank you to the parents who organized our movie night and basket raffles and to those who contributed so many tremendous items to our baskets. Without all of your efforts the night would not have happened. The wonderful John English community spirit was strong on Wednesday night when all the baskets were being wrapped in wonderful presentation style for raffle. Thank you as well to our Healthy Bites team of Jen Hara, Mary-anne Muzos and Liz Canrinus plus all the wonderful volunteers who gave of their time to prepare a nutritious meal for everyone attending.

Student Safety: Student safety is always a priority at John English which is a busy place during morning drop off and afternoon pick up. Students and parents are reminded to cross at the crosswalks or at the intersection and to look carefully both ways when they are about to cross the street. We also remind drivers to use extra caution when travelling on streets around the school. For more information, see the attached Fact Sheet from Toronto Public Health.

Kiss’n’ride: Parents who must drive their children to school are encouraged to use our Kiss `n Ride loop which is supervised between 8:35 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. and in the afternoon from 3:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please do not park on either side of the street near the parking lot entrance or exit. If you must accompany your child into the school, please park a safe distance from the school and walk your child in.

Grade 8 Trip Information Night: A Grade 8 trip information night is scheduled for April 19th at 6:00 p.m. The night will provide final details about the trip and will be an opportunity for parents to speak directly to teachers and camp representatives.

We Walk for Water Bake Sale: On Thursday, April 19th at lunch in the cafeteria, we will be having a Bake Sale to raise money for our “We Walk for Water” campaign. Every $25 we raise gives one person access to clean water for life! Students can bring a loonie or toonie to get a sweet treat and make a difference in the lives of women and children around the world. For more information about We Walk for Water visit WE Walk for Water

Little Mermaid – Musical: We are intending to have our auditorium ready for the musical onMay 9th and 10th. Any decisions about postponing the production due to repairs will be sent out in next week’s update. Tickets are available to cast members beginning April 9th and will be available to the rest of the school beginning April 23rd. The John English musicals are always one of the highlights of the year.

Dental Screening: Our annual dental screening took place last month over a period of 2 weeks. Any children who were found to have dental problems will be followed up by the public health dental staff. Please note that Toronto Public Health provides free dental care for eligible clients at convenient locations across the city. Please visit for more information.

Summer School: Although it is only the beginning of March, many families are beginning to plan for the summer months. This year, John English JMS will be home to the KKSA Leadership Arts Academy from July 4–27. Application forms available at Any questions should be directed to 416-394-7979

John English EcoSchool Initiative – Bag2school – Spring drive: Do you have any unwanted clothing, sheets, towels, cloth shopping bags, shoes or purses that are just taking up space at home? Did you know that all of these items are NOT accepted by our city recycling program and that they take up a huge amount of space in our landfill? But most of these items can be reused or recycled! Bag2School is an organization that takes all of these items to keep them out of the landfill stream, reuses/recycles them and they pay participating schools for the amount of textiles collected. Mr. Tang’s class, as part of our EcoSchool program, is doing a spring collection drive for Bag2School now until April 27th. Postcards with information of which items are accepted have been sent home and more information about the program can be found at

Our team continued to show their skills and team spirit until the end of the game. Unfortunately, a loss ended the volleyball season; however, the team had a great year and created wonderful memories. Mme Gitto and Ms. Sharda are so proud of the team and they look forward to celebrating their season next week.
